1.. How does Yoga change me physically,
mentally, emotionally and spiritually?
Normally Yoga is viewed as asana & pranayama. Actually that
is not so. When onewants to do Yoga one has to practice all the
eight arms of RajYoga called Ashtang Yoga. Not all are aware of
the existence of this format & few are taught. Asana & pranayama
are the 3rd & 4th arms of Ashtang Yog. One is enjoined to practice
Truth, Ahimsa, and Aparigraha , Asteya, Brahmaacharya together with
Pratyahara & Dhyana toattain some level of Yog in one's life.
So obviously the practice of such principles, opens
out great vistas of attitudinal
change and gives a brilliant shine to everything one does.
2.. Does my worldview
change with exposure to Yoga?
Since Yoga enjoins upon you personality and character changes, the
first thing that
happens is that your attitudes and perceptions change, which lad
you to view the
world with different eyes.
3.. Any experiences
that you had in the course of your encounter with Yoga that you wish
to share?
I have learnt more than I have taught not only from my teachers
but also from the
people who have come to my classes. For example I did not know that
the quantum of
'japaa' is not a restricted, conscious sound, it is the constant
chanting,
sometimes, soundless of the name of the Lord as one continues one's
daily life. I
learnt it through one of my 'students'.
4.. In what ways
is Yoga spreading in the world?
Give examples that highlight thediversity of its practitioners.
Yoga is now being practiced as part of the syllabi
in most schools, it is a
recognized HRD tool, employed (by me) in large organizations like
BPCL, Air India
etc.Besides many reform centres like Tihar Jail and other such centres
actively use
Yoga as a tool to reform, address and heal the practitioners. Yoga
ha staken the
world by storm and many allied industries (clothes, mats ,accessories)
have spawned
off from the original Patanjali Sutras.
5.. Has Yoga created
any new direction in your life?
Yoga has taken me from the depths of emotions to a balanced plane
, where my
personality and character defects have been minimized and my talents
and skills have
come to the fore front. So I have become 'kaushal' in all that I
do: a parent, a teacher, a journalist, friend and metaphysical healer.
6.. Which is your
favourite asana and what does it do for you?
Sarvang asana is the new age elixir for most disease/ pathological
problems in male
& female human bodies.
As it's name implies it massages and invigorates
'sarv', all, 'ang' organs of the body.
I had a retroverted uterus after my second pregnancy
and sarvang asana righted it in
no time.
7.. What made you
decide to teach Yoga?
I started learning Yoga at the age of 21, which was in an ashram
atmosphere, where
one had to practise all the four disciplines of Yog, karma, bhakti,
raj and gnyanyog. Having been through it, and having studied extensively
I was invited to teach at the Swami Vivekanand Centers across the
country.
It happened that in the course of teaching, people,
most of who, at that time in my
life were much older than me; I began to see tremendous results,
therapeutically, in
my students. So I continued teaching.
8.. Is it a viable
profession? How much do you make out of it?
I do not charge to conduct classes, no matter where I have taught.
NY, Austin,
Texas, Goa, Bombay, Delhi etc.
When I conduct Corporate HRD capsules, based on Yogic principles,
I charge a fee.I also charge a fee for Yogic counselling
9.. What are the
benefits most people make out of it?
Concentration, emotion refinement, personality changes, fitness, antiageing
10.. Where all do
you teach Yoga? What sections of society are benefiting from it?
All over, depending on where I get the invitation to teach. Celebrities,
children,
patients, and regular seekers.
11.. Recommend a
few asanas anyone can do.
Surya Namaskar is an excellent all round practice, besides simple
asanas such as
Parvatasana, niralambha asana, Simha asana, Setubhand, Bhujang,
Shalab and Ardha chakra are possible for anyone with any complaints
to perform.
12.. Which are the
best-known Yoga institutions in India?
Bihar School of Yoga, Prashanti Kuteeram, Bangalore, Kaivalyadhama
in Lonavala, Yoga Institute of Bombay, Vivekananda Kendra in Kanyakumari
and Iyengar School of Yoga in Pune. While Dhirendra Brahmachari
was alive his school was the best attended and known.
13.. Names of people who have benefited from Yoga
Guru Iyengar himself, Indira Gandhi, Deepak Chopra, Lara Dutta,
Yukta Mookhey and many others like Madonna etc.
14.. Can Yoga change
the world?
Absolutely.Because Yoga enjoins you to the metaphysical sphere,
if every individual
reaches an average state of clear perception, good health, clear
thinking and
emotion management, the world they live in, is bound to change-for
the better.
15.. Any books that
talk about the philosophy of Yoga, etc?
Hundreds of them. Patanjali Yoga Sutras, Raj Yoga by Swami Vivekanada
, books by BKS Iyengar and Bihar School of Yoga, books written by
Dhirendra Brahmachari, Osho .It for the seeker to find his or her
path.
